There is also another legend attached with Szklarska Poręba, the legend of Duch Gór, the Mountain Ghost. The town is strongly connected with this character, also known as Karkonosz or Liczyrzepa. Legend has it that the Mountain Ghost was the ruler of Karkonosze Mountains who took care of the region. He had an unrequited love for a Princess of Świdnik and he abducted her. The girl however outwitted him when she asked Liczyrzepa to count all stickers on the meadows (Liczyrzepa in Polish means the one who counts stickers) and she ran away to her fiancé. In Szklarska Poręba numerous references to this legend can be found. In the town you can participate in a theme town game, admire the statue of the Mountain Ghost or take a wander along a didactic trail called “Ogród Ducha Gór”, “Garden of the Mountain Ghost”, located by the former house of the Hauptmann Brothers.
